  • 'Superman' Will Fly Into Theaters Early

Warner Brothers has bumped up the release of "Superman Returns" by two days.

Instead of taking flight on movie screens everywhere on Friday, June 30, Bryan Singer's reboot of the superhero franchise will now open on Wednesday, June 28, extending the potential franchise pic's release through the protracted July 4th weekend.

"We were always considering this an option," Dan Fellman, WB's president of domestic distribution tells Variety. "I'm glad that we are in position to do it and take advantage of the summer holiday playtime."

The trade paper reports that the studio had long hoped to have "Superman Returns," which stars Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey and newcomer Brandon Routh, in theaters by the Wednesday, but there had been some internal questions regarding the completion of prints, particularly those for the movie's IMAX run.

Now, though, "Superman Returns" is set up for an open playing field from the end of June through the July 4th holiday, which falls on a Tuesday. For that period, "Superman" will face only counterprogramming from Fox's "The Devil Wears Prada."

More competition is expected on July 7th with the release of Sony's "Little Man," as well as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" from Disney.

    ---------
Are you thinking what I'm thinking people? Using the 4th July holiday as an excuse cause their running scared over the release of Pirates? This is awesome!

  • Aniston doesn't care about peace

Maybe it was a joke. Or perhaps Jennifer Aniston was having a dig at her ex-hubby, Brad Pitt and his new flame, Angelina Jolie.

Aniston was sitting at a press conference in Los Angeles to promote her new comedy, The Break-Up, when a reporter asked if she was interested in using her celebrity to tackle any of the world's important issues.

Pitt and Jolie, in between giving birth to daughter Shiloh Nouvel, have been vocal about Africa, AIDS and refugees.

So, was Aniston interested in any global issues? How about the war in Iraq or global warming?

"No," Aniston replied. "I'm not interested in any of that."

"I like to just focus on me and my tabloid career."

Her deadpan answer, dripping with sarcasm, scored plenty of laughs.

Aniston went on to say she had plenty of interests, but opted not to reveal them at the press conference.

This poster girl of the tabloids does not give up too much about herself these days, something Australian journalists will learn when she arrives next week in Sydney to promote The Break-Up.

"I have a lot of other interests," Aniston, 37, said defensively. "But, I don't need to tell you all my interests, but there's a lot."

One campaign she probably would not mind leading is a ban on tabloids.

They ran stories about troubles in her marriage to Pitt for months before the star couple officially announced on January 7 last year that they were separating after more than four years of marriage.

The split then sent the tabloids into another frenzy as they chronicled Pitt's relationship with his Mr and Mrs Smith co-star, Jolie, and Aniston's apparent romance with Vince Vaughan, her co-star in The Break-Up.

  • Paris Hilton Wannabes Bash Pink

Pop rocker Pink was blown away after giving a speech to 700 girls at Toronto's Humberside Collegiate Institute while promoting her album 'I'm Not Dead', after a group of Paris Hilton wannabes slammed her words, according to the National Enquirer.

The singer explained to the female audience that they shouldn't imitate the Hollywood blonde.

Pink enjoyed screams and applause from the majority of the girls, except for a group of 15-year-old miss prisses who threw insults at her, such as, "Maybe you put down Paris because you are soooo fat and UGLY!"

The singer remained confident in her views, and told them to avoid the "stupid girl epidemic".

The Hilton wannabes snapped back, "You're just jealous because Paris has talent."

  • Big Brother 'cheat' goes on hunger strike

A Big Brother contestant ejected from the house for rule-breaking has gone on hunger strike in an attempt to get hold of unedited footage of her time inside.

Dawn Blake, 38, wants to force the show's producers to hand over all film they have of her, and has pledged to refuse food "until I pass out".

She claims that she was held against her will, and needs evidence of her requesting to leave the house to support a complaint she has made to police.

Ms Blake also denied that she had refused to wash while in the house.

She said: "When I came out of the Big Brother house I saw how I was portrayed and a lot of it is not true, it's been edited in a way I don't like, not because I don't look so great but because it's just not true.

"When they said they booted me out, I said I wanted to leave. When they said Dawn refused to wash, that was so untrue.

"I am asking for a copy of the unedited footage in its entirety and I will remain on hunger strike until I get it. I will continue until I pass out."

Unable to afford the legal fees to bring a case for defamation against the show's producers, she said going on hunger strike was her only option.

A spokeswoman for the Big Brother programme said Ms Blake, who left on Thursday, was thrown out of the house for breaking the rules.

  • Denis Leary Interview

Denis Leary is all fired up about the new season of Rescue Me. The FX show last left off with a cliffhanger and there are more twists in store for the season premiere. Leary, 48, gives the inside scoop on the drama, his son following him into showbiz and why kids' movies make him cool.

Season two ended on a sad note, with your character's son being killed by a drunk driver. What happens next?
In the first four episodes, a lot of stuff comes up that's gonna turn your head. His family is breaking up and then there's a danger of the family of the firehouse breaking up. For Tommy, that's sort of the end of the world.

Your 16-year-old son Jack also works on the show.
Jack works as a (production assistant) on the show when he's out of school. Last year he played a kid with his head stuck in a fence.

Will your wife be making a cameo next?
No, he's the only one. Acting is kind of what he wants to do, so the reason I gave him the P.A. job is that I wanted him to find out what it's really like to work on a TV show – you get up at 5:30 in the morning, you work 12 or 14 hours. He accepted it and loved it. In return for that, I gave him a couple of small parts so he could get used to acting on camera.

How do you film those trademark fire scenes?
People don't understand how many fake fires are happening in Manhattan – fires that the Rescue Me cast has to put out. It's real fire, but it's controlled by us. Without fail, the real firemen get called because somebody's looking out a window and says, "Oh my God, these kids are trapped in a burning bus!"

Do real fireman ever pitch storylines?
Almost all of our stories are based on real stories that come from different guys that I know. And we're going to mention the New Orleans fire department this season because that fire department has been decimated. They lost 22 out of 36 houses. Those guys came to visit the set and a lot of the guys from our set had been down there to help them deal with (Hurricane) Katrina.

You voiced the tiger Diego in the Ice Age movies. Why's your voice so distinctive?
    I don't know.

    Wager a guess.
I guess I sound like a tiger, which nobody ever said to me until the Ice Age people called me years ago.

    They told you that?
Yeah! And they called me to be the ladybug in (1998’s) A Bug’s Life. I thought that was pretty funny. I tell you, kids' movies are the easiest things in the world to do. . . . You can just go into a room, look like s---t and stand in front of the microphone all day. Plus, all my nieces and nephews automatically think (I'm) cool.

The drinking hole has been a popular haunt for celebrities who live in the area, including Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, supermodel Kate Moss and actress Sienna Miller.

The letter reportedly declared: "We live extremely near to the pub and have to endure enough noise after it has shut. If the hours are extended we fear our quality of living is going to be severely hampered."

  • Sharon Osbourne has kicked off a new spat

Sharon Osbourne has kicked off a new spat, live on air.

She threw some serious mud at Rebecca Loos in her capacity as judge on the new celebrity X Factor.

Rebecca was performing with fellow kiss 'n' teller James Hewitt.

The pair performed Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love - and without a hint of a smile, Sharon told them it was a great song choice and they were well suited to each other.

Turning to James, she asked: "You were in the army? With that performance you should be shot."

Then, rounding on Rebecca, she added: "If you get through tonight you should try doing tomorrow night's show with your knickers on. It will help warm up your voice."

When Simon Cowell - of all people - tried to get Sharon to stop, she went on to say that Rebecca had a "bad vibe" coming from her.

Rebecca, for her part, claimed she wasn't surprised by Sharon's comments, saying that she'd shunned the former PA throughout the show.

    The reason for Sharon's blast?

James has told all about his affair with Diana, Princess Of Wales, whilst Rebecca alleges an affair with David Beckham - and Shazza is great mates with one Victoria Beckham.

But clearly Sharon's wrath wasn't enough to get the pair booted off X Factor: Battle Of The Stars.

That honour went to magician Paul Daniels and wife Debbie McGee who caterwauled along to Robbie Williams' Let Me Entertain You.

  • Bellucci reportedly to play Sonia Gandhi

Italian actress Monica Bellucci has agreed to star in a film about Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born woman who married into India's most powerful political dynasty and now heads the country's ruling party, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Bellucci's deal was worked out at the Cannes Film Festival, the Times of India reported, quoting producer Sunanda Murli Manohar, who said the actress agreed to take on the role after reading the script.

"Her confirmation finally puts a seal on the deal. She is excited about the prospect of playing Sonia Gandhi," Manohar was quoted as saying. Shooting is expected to begin in September.

Italian-born Gandhi has cultivated an image as an intensely private woman who was forced into politics after her husband, former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was assassinated in a 1991 suicide bombing.

His mother Indira Gandhi — the country's longest-serving prime minister — also was assassinated, and his grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru was India's first prime minister.

Sonia Gandhi refused the prime minister's job when her Congress party and its allies won elections in May 2004 because of opposition from Hindu nationalists, who argued that a person of non-Indian heritage should not lead the country.

Still, she remains at the helm of the Congress party and wields a tremendous amount of power.

The movie will be directed by Jagmohan Mundhra, a well-known Indian filmmaker with several award winning movies to his credit.

Mundhra's latest film "Provoked" was screened at Cannes. Bollywood superstar
Aishwarya Rai played the lead role of a woman who kills her husband after suffering 10 years of abuse.

Mundhra told The Times that he had also considered Rai and Preity Zinta, another Bollywood leading lady, for the Gandhi project.

Neither the filmmakers nor Bellucci were immediately available for comment.

The annual Monaco Grand Prix Ball turned even grander just before midnight on Saturday when surprise guest Bono popped in to join the event's ball host Wyclef Jean for an impassioned duet of "Redemption Song."

Bono, who earlier in the day had sung on Formula One boss Flavio Briatore's yacht, Force Blue, arrived without warning, and with Jay Z in tow.

Jay Z, dressed in a white suit, kept silent during the performance, and within 10 minutes he and Bono were gone from the Salon des Etoiles, leaving thrilled partygoers to check out the photos on their digital cameras in disbelief.

To catch the big show, timing meant everything. "I missed Bono," mourned Kate Bosworth, another surprise guest who arrived about 20 minutes too late. Appearing with her new Superman costar Kevin Spacey, Bosworth said: "I wanted to come and be here earlier but I've been working and working, mostly."

The Grand Prix Ball raised more than $1 million for Jean's charity, Yele Haiti, which promotes development in Jean's native country. Jean teared up as he spoke about Haiti, then joked: "Just because I cried doesn't mean I'm going to be soft in the auction."

Some of the auction items fetched higher prices thanks to guest Petra Nemcova, who offered to pose with the winner of the Tahitian black pearl necklace worn by Jean pal Angelina Jolie when she received a humanitarian award from the U.N. in October 2005 (winning bid: $92,815).

  • Michael Jackson Visits Tokyo Orphanage

Michael Jackson visited a Tokyo orphanage Sunday during his first round of public appearances since being acquitted of child molestation charges last year.

Jackson was in the capital to accept MTV Japan's "Legend Award" during an earlier ceremony at Yoyogi Olympic Stadium. There, he choked up as he thanked fans for their loyalty.

His visit to Japan is the first leg of an Asian swing that will include stops in Singapore; Shanghai, China; and Hong Kong.

After weaving through dozens of screaming adult fans outside the downtown orphanage, Jackson was ushered into a gymnasium, where more than 160 children between the ages of 3 and 18 and nuns in gray uniforms waited.

"I love you," Jackson told the cheering crowd. Then he whispered to his translator, apparently asking how to say the phrase in Japanese. Then he said: "Aishiteru!"

The pop icon also was scheduled to tour Tokyo and meet with members of the Asian business community during his six-day visit, his publicists said.

Jackson's visit to Tokyo was announced only days before his Friday arrival.

Jackson, 47, has been living in the Middle Eastern kingdom of Bahrain since being acquitted of child molestation in California in June. He has said he plans to return to recording and hopes to release a new album in 2007.

  • The Latest on Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt

Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt has tufts of brown hair like her mother and the nose of her father, according to sources at the Cottage Hospital in Swakopmund, Namibia.

The daughter of Angelina Jolie, 30, and Brad Pitt, 40, is described as "beautiful" by insiders who have seen her.

And she may have Canadian roots. There is speculation that Shiloh Nouvel was conceived in Alberta, where Pitt and Jolie were staying while he filmed The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston is reportedly among those who have sent best wishes to the new parents.

Jolie’s brother James Haven was at the hospital in Namibia for the birth but her estranged father, actor Jon Voight, was not. His spokesman told the New York Daily News that Voight is excited and “can’t wait to hold the baby in his arms and be grandpa.”

Shiloh Nouvel is the couple’s first biological child. Son Maddox, 4, was adopted from Cambodia and daughter Zahara, 1,was adopted from Ethiopia.

She was born Saturday, reportedly via Caesarean section. Leon Jooste, a minister in the country’s government, said under Namibian law the Pitt-Jolie baby is eligible for citizenship.

Jolie is expected to be released from hospital Tuesday. The family will return to the luxury resort where they have been staying for almost two months under heavy security.

The governor of the Erongo region of Namibia issued a statement wishing the famous couple good luck and health.

“Just like Angelina, this precious Namibian-born baby will be our ambassador,” said Samuel Nuuyoma.

  • Bon Jovi's Doherty pity

Jon Bon Jovi would never want to swap places with Pete Doherty.

The rocker insists he feels sorry for the Babyshambles rocker and says he is proud that he was not the typical rock star and didn't get notoriety for taking drugs like other performers in the industry.

He said: "Those people get a lot more attention. Like Pete Doherty. I hear he's great. But I've never heard a Babyshambles song in my life
… I'd rather be doing what I'm doing.'

The singer insists he was never a "drug guy', because illegal substances make men under-perform in the bedroom.

He told Britain's Guardian Film and Music newspaper: "I have a nice wine habit, but I was never into drugs. Why do I need something that's going to grind my teeth all night and won't let me get it on with a woman.'

  • English radio station bans James Blunt songs

An English radio station said it has banned songs by British crooner James Blunt from its airwaves after listeners said they were fed up with hearing "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover".

Chris Cotton, programme controller of local radio Essex FM in southern England, said: "We don't have anything against James Blunt and we're pleased he has been so successful, but we really need a break."
The music industry exerts a lot of pressure on radio stations to play certain artists' music over and over again, Cotton said.

"Often this can be out of step with the audience's tastes, which results in songs being overplayed," he said. "We're happy to stand up to this pressure and follow the strong message listeners have given us. We encourage other radio stations to take the same step."

Despite this minor setback, Blunt has enjoyed phenomenal success since his voice first emanated from radio stations across the world last year.

"You're Beautiful" topped the charts in 25 countries.

In March, the former army officer became the first British artist to reach the number one slot in the US Billboard chart in nine years.
His album, "Back To Bedlam" has sold more than seven million copies worldwide.

  • Doctor: Jolie & baby doing well in Namibia

It looks like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got what every parent wants — a healthy baby. While Namibian officials declined Sunday to give any details on the birth Saturday of Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, a doctor at the hospital said there were no complications and the mother and daughter were doing well.

"She is a healthy baby," the doctor said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information.

Police ringed the hospital with tight security Sunday, refusing to admit journalists and photographers into the building.

Pitt's publicist Cindy Guagenti announced the birth Saturday night, but said no other information or photographs would be released.

Samuel Nuuyoma, the governor of the Namibian region of Erongo, confirmed the birth at the Welwitschia Clinic in Walvis Bay and seemed to hint that key details would be released shortly.

"Any information relating to the birth of the baby will be made available to the public soon," said Nuuyoma, who has become friends with the celebrity couple.

The government has gone to extraordinary lengths to protect the privacy of Jolie and Pitt, who came to Namibia to avoid photographers and in the weeks leading up to the birth of their first child.

Namibia put tight security around their hotel and the hospital, set up large green barriers to protect their privacy from photographers and refused to grant visas to any foreign journalists unless they had written permission from Jolie and Pitt to cover the birth.

Police have also arrested photographers and confiscated film.

In Springfield, Mo., where Pitt graduated from Kickapoo High School in 1982 and his parents and siblings remain, Pitt's family said they were delighted.

"It's an exciting time for Brad and Angie, and we are really happy for them and the kids," Brad's brother, Doug Pitt, told the News-Leader in an e-mail.

  • Doherty Cheated On Kate With Nikki

BIG Brother babe Nikki Grahame spent a night of lust with junkie rocker Pete Doherty just days after he rekindled his romance with Kate Moss.

Pasty-faced Pete cheated on supermodel girlfriend Kate when 24-year-old Nikki latched on to him in a club, a close pal said.

    The troubled Babyshambles singer...

BEGGED Nikki not to tell anyone in case Kate found out.

SMOKED crack cocaine in front of the startled drug-hating blonde.

SERENADED her with his guitar in his filthy needle-strewn flat.

SCRIBBLED her e-mail address with the blackened end of an old drug needle.

Nikki - who wore a bunny-girl outfit for the start of Channel 4's Big Brother Seven - told her pal: "I don't know how Kate Moss coped with him."

The BB glamour girl had a fling with Doherty in March just days after he and Kate were photographed leaving a pal's house in North London.

Kate had resumed her on-off romance with the star following the scandal over pictures of her snorting cocaine.

But fame-hungry Nikki latched on to Kate's man at exclusive London club Boujis.

Her ex-flatmate Laula Lavin, 21, revealed:

'She'd had a lot to drink and they ended up going back to his place in Notting Hill, just the two of them. He got his guitar out and started singing to her.

He was singing Babyshambles songs. He told her he was going to write a song for her.

Nikki thought he was really sweet and caring but his flat was disgusting. There were needles everywhere and it was filthy.

She also said his fingers were really grubby and disgusting. She couldn't believe she let him touch her with them.

Nikki said he was smoking crack in the house and blowing the smoke in her face.

He also disappeared for a while leaving her on her own. She thought he might be shooting up.

Nikki is really anti-drugs. She spent the night at his place but she didn't want anything long-term.

She said she didn't know how Kate Moss coped with him.

Nikki's a very hygienic person, I'm surprised she stayed there with all the needles and other stuff lying about. She doesn't go into explicit details when she sleeps with someone, but she did tell me she spent the night with him.

Afterwards he begged her not to tell anyone because he was still with Kate.

She gave him her e-mail address so they could stay in touch. He used an old needle to write it down. The end of it was all blackened where he had burnt it.

The morning after he paid for a taxi to take her home. She's not seen him since and didn't get any messages either.

She went with him because he's famous, that's the reason, 100 per cent. Also the fact he was seeing Kate Moss.

It was a power trip for her. She knows men think with their willies.

He was begging her not to go to the papers but she'd never do that.

She would never kiss and tell. She wants to marry a footballer and she knows if she got a reputation for doing that then she'd never get one.'

Laula, a glamour model, also revealed how Nikki - who had her boobs enlarged when she was 18 - once spent the night at hunk Calum Best's flat but all she got was a stinging backside.

Laula, who lived with Nikki for nine months, said: "She'd been out with a girlfriend and they met Calum and a couple of his mates.

"They went back to his flat. The other girl was with Calum and Nikki was with one of his friends.

"At one point Nikki was lying on the bed wearing a pair of hot pants. Calum walked past and slapped her on the bum.

"It was only meant to be playful but it left a handprint.

"She went hysterical. She can really turn the tears on when she wants to. She gets angry very easily.

"Apparently she started ranting and raving and making everyone really uncomfortable."

Laula said the real Nikki - who is also reputed to have spent a night with Blackburn Rovers star Lucas Neill - has yet to be seen in the BB house.

Laula said: "She likes to get her own way all the time so I expect there will be a few fireworks in the coming weeks.

"She's not been too bad so far. She's not throwing too many tantrums."

But she came close to it late on Friday night when she found a condom planted in her bed.

When she threw back her quilt, Nikki shrieked: "That is disgusting. I'm not sleeping in there."

Sexually frustrated Richard snapped: "At least you're getting more attention."

After quizzing the housemates, Nikki finally discovered that it was cheeky city trader Sezer who had placed it there.

  • Did the Red Hot Chili Peppers rip off Tom Petty

Red Hot Chili Peppers are embroiled in a plagiarism storm after a US radio presenter accused the band of stealing copyright work from Tom Petty.

The Californian bands latest single 'Dani California' is said to be a complete rip-off of the Tom Petty track 'Mary Jane's Last Dance'.

The accusation was revealed by Dan Gaffney during his morning radio show on WGMD in Delaware.

Station producer Jared Morris also lent his input into the accusation, he said: “The chord progression, the melody, the tempo, the key, the lyrical theme… they’re identical.”

The controvery surrounding the track is expected to gather pace in the coming weeks, Gaffney has already posted this MP3 to show the uncanny similarities between the two tracks and to help people make their own decisions on whether the band ripped off the 90's hit by Petty.

Although the evidence does seems pretty damning, it is commonly believed that there's not much new in terms of music these days, and most music is 'borrowed' or 'heavily influenced' from an earlier work. Maybe the Chili's hold these same beliefs, and Tom Petty should be flattered rather than feel insulted or ripped-off.

  • STERN says Les Moonves is "...one of the biggest jerks on the planet"

Shock jock Howard Stern regained control of the master tapes from the last 20 years of his terrestrial radio program in a Friday settlement of the contentious lawsuit brought by his former bosses at CBS Radio.

Stern's new employer, Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., agreed to pay $2 million to CBS Radio in return for the rights to the classic recordings, according to a statement released by both sides.

"As part of the settlement, CBS Radio will receive payments relating to the conveyance of its rights in the recordings of `The Howard Stern Show,'" the statement read. "Sirius, for its part, will make a total payment of $2 million related to this conveyance."

The remaining details of the settlement remained confidential, according to the statement.

CBS spokesman Dana McClintock declined to make any further comment, and Stern's agent, Don Buchwald, did not immediately return a call about the settlement.

CBS Radio sued Stern in February, the latest salvo in an escalating battle between the corporation and its former star employee. The company claimed Stern had violated his contract by improperly using his airtime on CBS stations to promote his January 2006 move to Sirius.

Stern "misappropriated millions of dollars' worth of CBS Radio air time for his own financial benefit," the 43-page lawsuit charged.

Stern also discussed his plans with Sirius without disclosing them to CBS, as required by his contract, the lawsuit said.

Stern angrily responded by attacking CBS chief executive officer Les Moonves. The shock jock, in an appearance with David Letterman on "Late Show," wore an "I Hate Les Moonves" T-shirt decorated with the executive's face.

"I believe you are working for one of the biggest jerks on the planet," Stern told Letterman, whose show airs on CBS. "Les Moonves is a bully."

Stern, 50, was the anchor of CBS's radio division with his nationally syndicated morning show until he bolted for satellite radio in January under a five-year, $500 million contract. Lawyers on both sides confirmed the settlement on Wednesday, but no details emerged until the statement was released two days later.

During the last months of his terrestrial radio show, Stern battled constantly with his bosses and was suspended for a day over his alleged promotion of Sirius.

She told Britain's More magazine that Nicole once told her: "Hoodia makes you look hot in low-cut tops and backless dresses. It is good for me - the bushmen have sworn by it for hundreds of years and that's good enough for me."

The troubled 24-year-old dropped from a US size 2 to a US size 0 in a matter of months following her brief split from Adam Goldstein last December and she recently confessed that she was too thin.

The source explained: "It would be foolish not to ensure they are properly guarded for every eventuality."

Meanwhile, a prequel to controversial blockbuster 'The Da Vinci Code' is already in the pipeline.

Producers Sony plan to adapt Dan Brown's novel 'Angels and Demons', set before the bestseller, following impressive box office takings of $230 million for the opening weekend.

Why not just stick with Simpson, 25? "It's a prequel, like Batman (Begins)," he says. "We're going for a whole new cast."

Simpson and husband Nick Lachey, 32, announced in November 2005 that they were separating. In March, Lachey and Cavallari were spotted flirting at various restaurants and parties – although Cavallari said, "There's nothing to talk about, there's nothing going on. Blige and, toward the end, all 12 finalists performed with Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick.

The statement comes from the company's Director of Publishing, Liz Calder, who made the prediction whilst on a visit to India.

At the British Council’s Creative Future conference, Calder reportedly spoke about J.K. • Brad's bike ride called wheely big mistake

Spears, who has been blasted for putting her baby, Sean, at risk during recent car trips, has some company now that safety watchdogs are nipping at Pitt.

Thursday, the actor went out for a bicyle ride in Langstrand, Namibia, with son Maddox Pitt-Jolie, 4, and daughter Zahara Pitt-Jolie, 16 months.

Maddox, who wore a helmet, peddled a tricyle. Zahara, who did not, rode in a blue papoose strapped to Brad's back. That's a no-no, according Debra Smiley Holtzman, author of "The Safe Baby."

"[Zahara] needs a helmet and closed-toe shoes," Holtzman tells Us Weekly, which features photos of the outing in its new issue. "And I highly recommend toddlers ride in a child trailer pulled by a bike. It's more stable and secure."

Baby Talk senior editor Christina Vercelletto agreed.

Makers of the baby-pack "specifically say, 'Do not use while riding a bike,'" Vercelletto told us. "[It] will affect your balance. The safest place for her would be in a toddler bike seat."

Pitt's rep had no immediate comment on the scolding. Maybe the kiddie-caboose hasn't reached Namibia, where Pitt and Angelina Jolie are awaiting their first biological child.

Pitt Tuesday sent word from Africa that, because of the baby's "imminent arrival," he couldn't join castmates Cate Blanchett and Gael García Bernal at the Cannes Film Fest premiere of "Babel."

  • Hugh speaks out

HOLLYWOOD and Broadway star Hugh Jackman has revealed the "inner demons" that have driven him since his British mother abandoned him as a child in Australia.

The 37-year-old actor has previously been reluctant to explain why his mother vanished from their home in Sydney when he was eight.

But now that he has two adopted children of his own, the $20 million-a-film actor says he finds it easier to talk about his tangled relationship with his mother, Grace, who lives in southeast England.

Jackman said he wondered whether coming from a broken home had fuelled his drive to succeed in Hollywood.

Jackman's mother and his father Christopher emigrated to Australia in the 1960s. His father became a successful accountant but, for his mother, bringing up five children proved too much.

One day she vanished, reappearing later in England. Her two daughters, Zoe and Sonia, joined her, but sons Ian, Ralph and "baby" Hugh stayed with their father.

"My mother was not well. She was probably suffering from undiagnosed postpartum (postnatal) depression after she gave birth to me - so bad that for my first 18 months, I was brought up by my godparents," he said.

"I always hoped she would come back, but I never blamed her for anything that went wrong. At the time, I was miserable and angry, and my brothers and I used to fight all the time.

"My father tried his best, but he was very stretched raising three boys and he worked long hours so we were often left to fend for ourselves."

He said he first channelled his anger into sports at Knox Grammar School, where he played rugby. If he made a tackle, he would go into a "little white rage".

Jackman turned to acting in his 20s. He turned down a role in Neighbours but in 1998 won plaudits as Curly in the National Theatre's revival of Oklahoma! in London.

A year later, he was offered the role of Wolverine in the X-Men films.
