US cable network TNT has renewed detective drama The Closer for a third, 15-episode season.

The news comes after the second season debuted a month ago, recording the highest ever ratings for an original scripted series on cable.

"Once again The Closer has been one of television's biggest success stories of the summer," said Steve Koonin, evp of TNT. "[The show] is proving itself to be a sustainable hit with lasting appeal for drama lovers."

The third season will premiere in the US next summer.

The Gallagher brothers have been told to "fatten up" by their worried mother.

Liam and Noel have been summoned home to Burnage, Manchester by mum Peggy, who has become concerned with the stars' new fitness regimes.

Peggy saw a picture of Liam in a glossy magazine, prompting her to call her sons and tell them what she thought.

Actor Woody Harrelson is under investigation after allegedly assaulting a photographer outside a Hollywood nightclub.

The A Prairie Home Companion star was leaving well-known celebrity haunt Element when a group of paparazzi started taking pictures.

After asking them to stop, Harrelson walked up to photographer Josh Levine, put his hand on the camera and said: "I've asked you to stop, are you going to stop?"

Levine responded, "Not when you ask me like that". A scuffle then ensued, and the photographer later visited a hospital for treatment for neck lacerations.

Speaking to TMZ, the actor's publicist commented: "Unfortunately, this is not the first or last time the paparazzi have provoked an incident with a celebrity. Mr Harrelson is evaluating all of his legal options against the photographer."

Vandalism and assault and battery charges could be made against the actor after Levine filed a complaint with the Los Angeles Police Department and submitted a tape of the incident. Detective John Padilla remarked: "With the tapes and all, it's pretty good evidence."

Sir Elton John will write a personalised love song for one lucky person.

Ashlee Simpson has rubbished reports her father, JOE SIMPSON, controls her career, insisting he won't set foot into the recording studio until she gives him permission.

The PIECES OF ME singer maintains her father is misunderstood as a control freak, but is actually not as involved in her decisions as people think.

She explains, "(Sister) JESSICA (SIMPSON) and I are very much our own individuals. I'll make my record and not invite him into the studio until I invite him.

"Sure, he'll have an opinion but if I'm like, 'No, I want that song to be on my record' he'll be like 'All right, baby, you got it!'"

The former Baptist minister and adolescent psychologist also avoided giving Simpson a lecture when she was videotaped at a McDonalds outlet intoxicated, asking a fan to kiss her feet and climbing on the counter.

She says, "My dad could have been really mean to me about that, and he was so nice. He treated me like an adult."

Grammy-winning producer Dallas Austin, who has crafted songs for TLC, Madonna and Michael Jackson, pleaded guilty Sunday to cocaine charges in the United Arab Emirates, a newspaper reported.

Austin faces up to four years in prison when he is sentenced Tuesday, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"I'm pleading guilty but by mistake," Austin was quoted as saying during a short hearing in Dubai. "I had no knowledge and no intention of violating the laws of the U.A.E."

The songwriter, whose life story was loosely depicted in the 2002 movie "Drumline," was arrested May 19 at Dubai's airport.

He was on his way to a three-day birthday party for supermodel Naomi Campbell at a Dubai hotel, the newspaper reported. He was charged with cocaine possession and has been held without bail at a police station, it said.

The newspaper said four attorneys accompanied Austin to the hearing: Mohammad al-Reda of the United Arab Emirates, Qays Hatem al-Zu'bi of Bahrain, Joel A. Katz of Atlanta and another American lawyer who declined to give his name.

Austin, who is based in Atlanta, has several hits to his credit, including Pink's "Just Like a Pill" and TLC's "Unpretty." He won a Grammy Award for best R&B album in 1999 for producing TLC's multiplatinum "Fanmail." He also produced "Drumline" and "ATL."

Prime minister John Howard called today for the Australian version of Big Brother to be axed after a woman on the show claimed two male contestants sexually assaulted her.

The centre-right government has referred Network 10’s Big Brother – a fly-on-the wall series in which a group of strangers live together and compete for a cash prize – to the television standards watchdog over the incident on Saturday, communications minister Helen Coonan’s office said.

On a Sunday broadcast, the 22-year-old woman contestant was shown tearfully telling her housemates that one of the men held her arms while the other rubbed his groin in her face, although it did not broadcast footage of the alleged incident.

But footage was sent to police and the three people involved were questioned, Queensland state police said. The woman did not make an official complaint and no further police action was planned, police said.

Howard appealed to the youth-oriented network, formerly called Channel 10, to cut the long-running programme, which has been subject to complaints of poor taste in the past.

“I don’t like heavy-handed regulation. The business community is always saying to me, ‘let us self regulate’,” Howard told Sydney Radio 2GB. “Well, here’s a great opportunity for Channel 10 to do a bit of self regulation and get this stupid programme off the air.”

Sydney’s Daily Telegraph also criticised the network.

“The alleged sexual assault of a female housemate on Big Brother marks another new low in what constitutes entertainment in the modern age,” the newspaper said in an editorial.

But network and programme producers issued a statement today that “reaffirmed their commitment to the highly popular television programme”.

“Big Brother is very popular, as evidenced by the strong and broad audiences it draws every night of the week, and will remain on air,” Network 10 said.

It added that the two men accused over the incident had been pulled from the show “because they broke the rules of housemate conduct”.
