  • New Ash album "more stripped down"

Rock band Ash have promised that their new album will be more stripped down than their last release, and share similarities with their earlier work.

The group are currently in a New York studio recording the follow-up to 2004's hugely successful Meltdown, but have revealed that the new songs are very different.

Bassist Mark Hamilton told Kerrang!: “With Meltdown, we made a really super-slick, ultra-polished, highly-produced album and we wanted to do something different from that.”

Eschewing high-tech production techniques, the band have ambitious aims. “We’re going to try and record 90 per cent of the album live," Hamilton remarked.

Earlier in the year guitarist Charlotte Hatherley left the group, resulting in a more "stripped down" sound for the remaining three-piece.

“One song, 'Suicide Girls', has got a big pop chorus and is more like classic early Ash. It’s really exciting," he added.

  • 'Enders' Louisa Lytton leaves the Square

Louisa Lytton will leave the cast of EastEnders in November, after just over a year in her role.

The decision behind Lytton's departure from the show was a mutual one between herself and the producers when it became clear that there was nowhere for her character, Ruby Allen, to develop after Billy Murray ceased to play her character's father earlier this year.

A source from the soap explained: "The way the storylines pan out means there's not really much scope for Louisa's character any more."

Lytton, 17, joined the show last May and has since been a part of such storylines as the return of the Mitchell brothers, the arrest of her father, gangster Johnny, and her relationship with Juley.

The actress said of her stint on the show: "I've really enjoyed my time at EastEnders. It's been a great experience which I will never forget but I am now looking forward to trying new things."

Executive producer Kate Harwood explained: "Louisa has been a popular cast member at EastEnders, winning a soap award as sexiest female and a legion of fans. We are currently planning a dramatic exit for her character and we wish her the best of luck for the future."

  • Justin Timberlake vows to change pop music

U.S. singer and heartthrob Justin Timberlake wants to push the boundaries of pop music with a new album, "FutureSex/LoveSounds", that marks a departure from his earlier chart-topping style, he said on Friday.

Timberlake's first solo album, "Justified", sold more than seven million copies and has also moved into acting.

His new album is due to be released on September 11.

"I realize that I have a platform to push the sound of pop music. That's the only responsibility that I put on myself in recording the album," Timberlake told a news conference at the start of a promotional tour.

"If I'm not going to push it, then who's going to push it?"

The first single from the album, "SexyBack", features a pounding bass beat and electronic sounds, and does not include the falsetto singing that has become Timberlake's trademark. He said, however, that the album featured "a lot" of such singing.

"The best way I can describe that song is say David Bowie and David Byrne decided to do a cover of James Brown's Sex Machine," Timberlake told reporters.

He said the new sound was the product of a broad variety of influences, from soul legends Al Green and Marvin Gaye to bands such as The Beatles and The Eagles.

"I think it's important on your sophomore album to broaden your sound, to try something new, because if you do the same thing, then your third album has to be the same thing and your fourth album has to be the same thing and, you know, you don't grow," the former member of 1990s boy band *NSync said.

Timberlake wrote songs on the album with producer and rapper Timbaland, and the album features guest vocals by Timbaland, Atlanta rapper TI and Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas.

While he wants to change pop music, he said he was not aiming to take over Michael Jackson's 'king of pop' mantle.

"I think that you guys definitely want a new king of pop, you definitely want one and I'm probably not the only one who you might be thinking of. I don't want it. I want to do what I do," he said.

Joan Rivers is siding with Star Jones Reynolds. The tart-tongued comic says that the axed co-host of “The View” was right to announce on air that she was fired. “I’m not one of the girls, so I don’t give a [bleep] — as long as they keep using me on ‘The View,’” Rivers told the podcast The Strip. “But if someone was firing me, I’d come out and say I was fired. … Star did exactly the right thing.”

  • Rodriguez Blasted By Animal Rights Activists

Michelle Rodriguez has been blasted by animal rights activists for taking a baby tiger cub to a nightclub. The actress played with Skanda, a nine-week-old white tiger, for a charity event she was hosting in aid of a nature sanctuary.

PETA have now slammed the star for using the endangered animal for entertainment purposes.
A spokesman for the animal rights organisation, Dan Mathews, said: "These are wild animals, not party animals.

"We know Michelle Rodriguez is an animal lover, but I think she is unaware how infant animals need to be around their mother and not a clanging party scene.
"They're not meant to be an ornament at a party, even one that is designed to raise money for animals. It kind of defeats the purpose."

Rodriguez fed the baby tiger a bottle full of milk and went swimming with it in a pool.

The tiger was said to have looked distressed as it scrambled around the venue.

Club owner Satsky, who paid $10,000 to hire the tiger, said: "The music was bothering him a little bit. But his trainer was constantly feeding him milk, so that kind of calms him down."
