James Morrison's dad is a penniless drunk who lives in squalor. Paul Catchpole walked out on James' mum Suzy when the talented singer was still just a young boy.
And after being tracked down he admitted that every day is an uphill struggle to try to beat the bottle.
He also revealed his now famous son has been calling him every other day - to check that his dad is still alive.
Eyes glazed and swaying from side to side in the doorway to his flithy one-bed flat, Paul said: "It always cheers me up when James rings. I love hearing what he's up to - especially as I don't get out much any more. Things really aren't good for me healthwise at the moment. I'm in a real bad way."
Former handyman Paul's health problems have been caused by years of alcohol abuse. He has tried desperatley to get a grip on it and millionaire-in-waiting James, whose debut album Undiscovered has become a No.1 hit has never lost hope that his dad will turn his life around.
Neighbours say they never see James, 21, who moved to Cornwall with his mum when Paul walked out. The star, who was born James Morrison Catchpole but now uses Morrison as his surname, lives in London. His single You Give Me Something has become a massive hit.
