Justin Timberlake began his intimate club tour to promote his upcoming second album with a star-studded show in Los Angeles on Friday.
Playing to a crowd brimming with celebs like Cameron Diaz, Kate Bosworth, Spike Lee, Paris and Nicky Hilton, Tyra Banks, Ellen DeGeneres and partner Portia De Rossi, and ‘NSync pal Lance Bass, the singer unveiled a new Prince-flavoured sound.
Taking to the House of Blues stage as the theme tune to ‘Inspector Gadget’ played, Timberlake kicked off the show with his hit ballad ‘Cry Me A River’ before launching into a series of old favourites and new tunes.
"I'm sure you guys are hip to this already, but I'm gonna play some new songs for y'all. Hope you like 'em. If you don't, f*** you!" he said before launching into songs from ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’, due for release in mid September.
But it wasn’t just singing and dancing duties for the former boy band member. At various points during the show he took to playing keyboards and guitar in his backup band that featured two other guitarists and no DJ.
Equally surprising was the number of guest stars who joined him onstage.
Black Eyed Peas supreme and Timberlake producer will.i.am joined in for ‘Damn Girl’, while two members of Tennessee rappers Three 6 Mafia provided “some Memphis hip-hop” on an unnamed new track that saw the singer trying to out-rap the Oscar-winning pair.
Producer Timbaland, who worked extensively on the new album, showed up for ‘Promiscuous’, with Timberlake providing the vocals usually performed by Nelly Furtado.
Timbaland also appeared during the show’s climactic ‘SexyBack’ — Timberlake’s new single.
Timberlake appeared playful throughout the show, with the singer and his band throwing in snippets of hits like Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and the Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’ between songs.
