Ronaldo Bangs His Bongos

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 16:44:29

Cristiano Ronaldo was spotted walking through Wilmslow in Cheshire, UK with a male companion yesterday afternoon. The 21-year-old Portuguese soccer star accessorized his outfit with a man purse and um, nice snakeskin belt!

In a recent TV interview, Cristiano revealed that he deals with stress by playing garden football, breaking TV sets, and playing the bongos! He said: “When I was mad once I put a television set up in a tree in my garden and tried to knock it down by kicking a football at it. And it worked! I was mad, really pissed off… I play football in my garden. I even broke a window once when we were playing outside. I made a pass to my cousin Nuno but the ball hit the glass and broke it! …I also have boxing gloves to hit something or someone to relieve stress. And I like to play the Jambe - bongo drums - because it feels good… “Sometimes when I perform badly or when things don’t go the way I want them to, I come straight home,” he said. “I eat something, follow the stairs, turn left, enter the small bedroom and lock the door. I just stay there.”

Danity Kane Involved in Car Accident

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 16:26:13

Four members of Danity Kane were injured in a limousine accident Thursday night en route to a performance in Toledo, Ohio.

According to an accident report filed with the Toledo Police Department, the group members — minus D. Woods, who caught a later flight to Toledo — had just wrapped up an appearance at the 92.5 KISS-FM radio studio. They were heading to their performance at Headliners when the left side of their black Lincoln Town Car was struck by another vehicle at an intersection.

"Three passengers complained of head pain," the report reads. "Additional limo arrived and transported the three to St. Vincent's [Mercy Medical Center]." A fourth member was also involved in the accident.

Two of the three people identified in the report — Shannon Bex and Aubrey O'Day (listed on the report as "Aubrey L'Day") — are members of Danity Kane. According to a St. Vincent's spokesperson, members of the group "were treated and released."

The group was forced to cancel that evening's appearance at Headliners as well as the show Friday night (October 13) at the Shotwell Pavilion in Rochester, Michigan.

Danity Kane were scheduled to make a pair of appearances — a signing in Paramus, New Jersey, and a performance in York, Pennsylvania — on Saturday. It is not known if those events will be canceled.

A spokesperson for Danity Kane's label, Atlantic Records, also confirmed to MTV News that the group was involved in an accident but had no further information. Just Wednesday, Danity Kane were announced as one of the opening acts on Christina Aguilera's North American tour, which is scheduled to begin in February

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 10:50:06

Shanghai Daily says the rapper has fallen foul of Chinese laws concerning references to violence, guns and drug dealers in his lyrics, and can no longer perform at the October 23 event.

In April, the Rolling Stones were asked not to perform any tracks containing suggestive lyrics. They agreed, with lead singer Mick Jagger noting: "Fortunately we have 400 more songs that we can play so it's not really an issue."

Gareth Gates plots comeback with documentary

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 10:41:42

Gareth Gates is planning to relaunch his music career with the help of an ITV documentary.

Camera crews have been following the chart-topping Pop Idol star in recent months as he works on new material and seeks a record deal.

An spokesperson for ITV1 said the hour-long programme will "showcase some of Gareth's new music as he prepares to re-launch back into the spotlight to do what he loves most".

22-year-old Gates was released from his contract with Sony BMG after his second album Go Your Own Way failed to reach the Top 10. This followed a tabloid expose of his affair with glamour model Jordan, despite Gates' initial denials. With his innocent image shattered, his predominantly young female fanbase deserted him.

The ITV1 spokesman added: "This prime-time footage will show the impacts and consequences that fame thrusts upon artists hoping to survive successfully within the pressures of the music industry."

The former Atomic Kitten singer is hoping to launch an acting career and wants her celebrity pal, who plays barmaid Michelle Connor, to put in a good word for her.

A source said: "Kym and Kerry have been friends since they met on the circuit when Kym was in Hear'say and Kerry was travelling with Westlife. They're both down to earth and from the same neck of the woods, so they were an obvious match for a friendship. They have a right giggle.

Miller Denies Having Temper Tantrum

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 05:07:26

Sienna Miller is denying a recent report that she threw a temper tantrum at a Pittsburgh bar when bouncers refused to let her in without ID.

Penny Folino, the owner of Young's Tavern, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that after bouncers turned her away, the 24-year-old actress "ripped off her hat and said, 'I am Sienna Miller. I am a famous actress!' That's what she did. She was basically throwing a temper tantrum."

The bar's bouncer, Dan Kovac, told the paper that Miller, who was with her father and stepmother, then snuck into the bar through a different entrance. He approached the group and escorted them out. "She was going crazy out there, stomping her feet, walking up and down the street," he told the newspaper.

However, Miller disputes the account. "These people are utter fantasists," her London rep, Ciara Parkes, said. "We have 10 witnesses, including local Pittsburgh people, who can vouch that Sienna never reacted this way and left the bar quietly. It is utter rubbish."

Through Parkes, Miller, who is in the Pennsylvania city filming The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, issued a statement denying she "in any way acted in an inappropriate manner.

"I was asked to provide ID and since I didn't have any with me, I was told I couldn't be served and asked to leave. I had no problem with this and my family and I left calmly without any further exchange of words," the actress says.

Miller also says the incident was witnessed by several people including "members of the crew from the film and some recent friends I have made at a local Starbucks."

The actress's father, Edwin Miller, also issued a statement saying that after the bouncer asked the actress to leave "several of our friends spoke to him and I introduced myself, asking if there was a way to solve the problem. He stated: 'She has ignored me since we arrived and if she'd been a little more pleasant, maybe I would agree, but there is no way now.' I can categorically state that at no time did Sienna engage in conversation with this person."

Edwin Miller said that later the group went to a bar called St. James Place, where they "had a great time with the staff and a number of Pittsburghers, all of whom were happy to see us enjoying their city."

Last week, Miller apologized for referring to Pittsburgh by a profane nickname in an interview with Rolling Stone, and claimed her words were taken out of context.

Nicole Kidman’s Fur-ry Premiere

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 03:25:20

Nicole Kidman signed autographs on the red carpet earlier tonight before the screening of her new film, Fur : An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus. Fur was the first film to kick off the Inaugural Rome Film Festival in Rome, Italy.

During a news conference, Nicole, 39, shared: “I wanted to support this festival and Italy. Film festivals are very good for small films like this one, the more we have the better. [Fur] is a small, small portrait. In fact it’s called an imaginary portrait. What counts is the creativity of the artist, what’s inside. My way of trying to play [photographer Diane Arbus] was more trying to capture her inner self… It’s not a biography. It’s more about walking into your own creativity, discovering what you are like inside and what you want to say to the world. In the same way you have acting in your blood, you have art, whatever that is, in your blood from the minute you are born. Arbus had that.”

DiCaprio works with orphans from SOS Childrens Villages

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 03:09:46

During filming for his new movie, "Blood Diamond", due out December 2006, Leonardo had the chance to meet and work with 24 orphaned children from the SOS Childrens Village in Maputo, Mozambique. The children were asked to be extras in the film and got to spend part of their summer break traveling to the movie set and working with the actors.

Leonardo was extremely touched by his interactions with the children and was thrilled to be a part of such a memorable experience for them.

SOS Childrens Villages opened its first village in Mozambique in 1986, after 16 years of civil war in the country had left many children orphaned and destitute. There are now 3 SOS Childrens Villages in Mozambique, home to hundreds of children orphaned as a result of war, poverty, and disease; problems that have plagued the country for years.

About SOS Childrens Villages

SOS Childrens Villages has been providing homes for orphaned and abandoned children since 1949. Today there are over 450 SOS Villages in 132 countries caring for over 60,000 children and hundreds of thousands more are helped through education, medical, and emergency relief programs. SOS Childrens Villages has been nominated fourteen times for the Nobel Peace Prize and is the 2002 winner of the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Award.

SOS Childrens Villages relies on the generous support of individuals as well as businesses to provide long-term support for the orphans in their care. Oprah & Bono promote clothing line

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 03:00:17

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey and humanitarian rocker Bono hit the city's "Magnificent Mile" on Thursday for a shopping spree to promote a new line of clothing, accessories and gadgets, including a special-edition iPod, that will raise money to fight AIDS in Africa.

Dozens of "(Product) Red" items will go on sale in the coming weeks by Gap Inc., Apple Computer Inc., Motorola Inc., Converse Inc. and Emporio Armani.

Portions of the product sales will go to The Global Fund, an organization that fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

"Some people won't put on marching boots, so we've got to get to people where they are at, and they're in the shopping malls," Bono said in a phone interview. "Now you're buying jeans and T-shirts, and you're paying for 10 women in Africa to get medication for their children with HIV."

The Gap, which will debut its Red line in stores on Friday, will donate half the profits to The Global Fund.

Apple will contribute $10 from the sale of each new red-colored iPod nano. The model, priced the same as its $199 cousins, goes on sale Friday.

The celebrities, who arrived at the downtown Chicago Gap store in a red Ford Thunderbird, got a sneak peak at the products during a private shopping stint that will be broadcast Friday on Winfrey's show.

After visiting the Gap, the duo walked along Michigan Avenue to an Apple store and picked up the red iPod, the first music product from the Cupertino, Calif.-based company designed to raise money for charity.

The two also stopped at Armani and Motorola stores.

"Shop 'till it stops," said Bono as he walked out of the Apple store clutching bulging shopping bags.

Usher forced to leave "Chicago"

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 02:56:14

A severe bout of strep throat has forced R&B star Usher to withdraw from the hit Broadway musical "Chicago," costing the show an estimated $400,000 in refunds.
The singer, who was scheduled to give his farewell performance tomorrow night, has been sidelined since last Friday. The first night he was out, hundreds of disappointed theatergoers stormed the box office, demanding their money back.

"It was pandemonium," a source said.

That night, the cast played to a theater that was half-empty. Since then, the refund line outside the Ambassador Theatre on West 49th Street has stretched halfway down the block.

"We never expected this," producer Barry Weissler told The Post. "He was very sick last week, and it's just gotten worse. Unfortunately, he won't be coming back."

The impact on ticket sales has "been horrible," the producer added. "Big refunds."

Theatergoers are entitled to a refund or a ticket exchange for another date anytime an above-the-title star is out of a show.

Despite the plunge, Usher's seven-week gig will still be extremely profitable.

The Killers 'offended' by Green Day

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 02:48:47

Brandon Flowers doesn't want to be an 'American Idiot'

Brandon Flowers has criticised Green Day for what he sees as their calculated anti-Americanism.

In particular, Flowers singled out the track 'American Idiot' and the fact they filmed their DVD 'Bullet In A Bible', which features the song, in the UK.

"You have Green Day and 'American Idiot'. Where do they film their DVD? In England," The Killers' frontman told The Word. "A bunch of kids screaming 'I don't want to be an American idiot' I saw it as a very negative thing towards Americans. It really lit a fire in me."

Explaining he was offended by the set-up, Flowers added: "You have the right to say what you want to say and what you want to write about, and I'm sure they meant it in the same way that Bruce Springsteen meant 'Born In The USA' and it was taken wrongly, but I was really offended when I saw them do that."

The singer added he felt the DVD was a bit of a a stunt.

"I just thought it was really cheap," he explained. "To go to a place like England or Germany and sing that song - those kids aren't taking it the same way that he meant it. And he [Billie Joe Armstrong] knew it."

The Killers' frontman said he believed that his band's new album 'Sam's Town' is a much better representation of America.

"People need to see that, really, there are the nicest people in the world here!" he declared. "I don't know if our album makes you realise that. But I hope it's from a more positive place."

John Mayer: No "Superfly"

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 02:42:11

Contemporary folk rock singer John Mayer is in trouble with the family of the late Curtis Mayfield.

Kirk Mayfield, the late R&B great’s son, wants Mayer put on notice publicly. The singer’s latest single, “Waiting on the World to Change,” Mayfield believes, is uncomfortably close sounding to his father’s classic, “We’re a Winner.”

Indeed, one listen to “Waiting” and it’s pretty obvious that the music is pure Mayfield. Even Mayer’s performance of it sounds like Curtis, who was famous for “Superfly,” “I’m So Proud,” “People Get Ready” and many other classic songs.

Of course, this kind of thing seems to be happening a lot lately. I told you last week that John Legend lifted the music from “Stormy,” by the Classics IV, changed the lyrics and pretended he wrote a new song called “Save Room.”

This used to be called plagiarism. Now it’s called “sampling.”

Mayfield, I’m told, is also listening closely to the new Legend album, which may contain a sample of his father’s work.

But Mayer, at least, hasn’t contacted the Mayfield estate for use of “We’re a Winner.” That, says Kirk Mayfield, won’t be tolerated.

On a completely separate note, I always thought Mayer had somehow appropriated the voice of Michael Franks, a popular but never successful singer of the late '70s whose biggest hit was “Popsicle Toes.”

Shrek, the Broadway Musical

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 02:33:53

Designers Tim Hatley and Hugh Vanstone have signed on to the forthcoming musical version of Shrek, the production announced Oct. 12.

Avenue Q director Jason Moore will stage the work penned by bookwriter David Lindsay-Abaire (High Fidelity, Fuddy Meers) and composer Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change; Thoroughly Modern Millie).

Tony Award winner Tim Hatley (Private Lives, Spamalot) will handle sets and costumes while Tony-nominated Hugh Vanstone (Spamalot, Bombay Dreams) covers lighting.

"The team has been working on developmental readings of the musical and are planning a production schedule working towards a debut for the musical as early as 2008," according to a release.

Based on a William Steig children's book, the green ogre-with-a-heart character has been featured in "Shrek" and "Shrek 2"; a third chapter is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on May 18, 2007.

DreamWorks Animation's first venture in legitimate theatre, the developing production was initiated by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Sam Mendes when the studio made a first-look deal with Mendes' producing entity, Neal Street Productions, Ltd. DreamWorks and Neal Street share producing credits.

Ugly Betty gets a full season

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 02:26:51

The Salma Hayek-produced comedy, which is based on a Colombian telenovela, has been picked up for a full season by the net. Betty has averaged 15.3 million viewers a week.

Ugly Betty has improved the time period for ABC by almost 100 percent in total viewers over the same period last year--from 7.8 million to 15.3 million. Combined with Grey's Anatomy, the show has helped ABC take on the CBS Thursday-night ratings block of Survivor and CSI.

Ugly Betty is based on Yo Soy Betty La Fea, a Colombian telenovela that has been translated into 30 languages. Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, a perky young woman who goes to work at fashion magazine Mode. Once there, she deals with prissy models, cutthroat coworkers, and her hapless boss.

"In just two weeks, Ugly Betty has given us an impressive foothold leading into the Grey's Anatomy hour on Thursday night," said ABC president Stephen McPherson. "The show has proven to be competitive in a very strong time period, and we're thrilled with Ugly Betty's performance."

Ugly Betty is the third new season show to get picked up. Last week, NBC picked up sci-fi drama Heroes for a full season, and yesterday CBS gave the full-season go-ahead to nuclear drama Jericho.

Lindsay Lohan & Keira Knightley In New Flick

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-14 - 02:21:26

Lindsay Lohan has been called many names throughout her stint as a music, film and tabloid darling. Her next one might be the most surprising of all: Mom.

Lohan divulged Thursday her commitment to star as a mother in "The Best Time of Our Lives."
The story revolves around Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, his wife Caitlin and the curious real-life incident in which childhood friend Vera Phillips (played by Keira Knightley) and her eventual husband William Killick opened fire on the Thomas home with a machine gun and a hand grenade. The characters were in their 20s at the time of the episode.

"It's a beautiful and amazing movie — a piece [that] takes place at the time of World War II," Lohan said. "I have a child in the movie."

Written by Sharman Macdonald (Knightley's mother) and directed by John Maybury ("The Jacket"), the film explores the events that led up to the incident and its effect on the Thomas family — which moved soon after from its home in Wales.

Lohan likens her role in the film to Clara Bow, the famed but ultimately tragic silent-film sex symbol whose success couldn't conceal deep childhood wounds.

While additional castmembers have not been announced, Lohan was visibly excited about working with Knightley — whose character Lohan described as having an enigmatic relationship with her own.

"[Keira] is older than me, but she kind of has a mysterious relationship with my lover," Lohan chirped. "And then there's somewhat of a lesbian undertone."

Thomas was one of the 20th century's most celebrated poets — as well as one of its most celebrated drinkers. After a night of binge drinking in New York six days before his death, Thomas quipped, "I've had 18 straight whiskies, I think this is a record!" Among modern readers, he's primarily known for his poem "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night."
