"Pirates" sail on Niagara Falls

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-10-30 - 18:24:11

Whilst the news outlets have focused on Buffalo-area storm damage up around Niagra Falls in recent weeks, a Hollywood film crew has had its lenses trained on the brink of the Horseshoe Falls - the biggest of the three waterfalls that make up Niagra Falls.

Now, Access Niagra reports that Walt Disney Studios is shooting falls-related scenes for use in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" scheduled for release in May.

The studio is not saying how the footage of the world-famous waterfall will be used, but there is speculation that moviegoers will see Captain Jack Sparrow and his shipmates facing oblivion courtesy of the giant cataract.

Stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were nowhere in sight - expected to be added later to the footage used.

Bloom For Robin Hood?

A close friend to Bloom confirmed on Monday that Orlando was in the process of negotiating a deal with Warner Bros. for a new Robin Hood movie apparently called Outlaws of Sherwood with Bloom as the lead.

My week: Geoffrey Rush, actor

The Pirates of the Caribbean star talks about Hollywood, Pink Floyd and monkeys.

Monday
As with every day recently, I waited for a call that never came. I've been staying in a cottage at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, completing my third stint as Captain Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

'Rain, wind machines, explosions, flying debris: I could almost do this in my sleep by now'
The almost watertight schedule had sprung a leak, so there was nothing to do but wait. I bounded down Sunset Boulevard to the extraordinary Amoeba Records, in search of some Pink Floyd albums, and supped on chicken and vegetable soup at Greenblatt's Famous Deli. It's the only place in LA you can avoid huge platefuls of fatty steak.

Tuesday
Still no call, so I did sudoku and trod water in the hotel pool. The failing autumn sun meant no one was there. Except Jerry Stiller -- senior vaudevillian in his seventies and father of Ben -- who was learning his lines.

As we waded, he told me about his lucky break in the 1960s at Peter Cook's Soho comedy club, The Establishment. He replaced Lenny Bruce after the stand-up was deported for obscenity. The past is a vibrant place.

Wednesday
At last, a call at 6.30am: I was needed on set to film the huge finale. My assistant brought me a frothy latte and we drove north to the industrial desert town of Palmdale. Two full-scale galleons were mounted on rocking gimbals against a blue screen in what, rumour had it, was a hangar for building stealth bombers.

After a breakfast burger and more than two hours in make-up, I was ready to face the rain, wind machines, loud-hailer directions, explosions, flying debris, plummeting stuntmen, and a skittish monkey specially trained to ignore me. I could almost do this in my sleep by now.

Thursday
Up at 7am to film close-ups for a scene set on an Asian pirate ship as it leaves a burning Singapore. I goaded my co-star, Orlando Bloom, while Gore Verbinski, the director, oversaw a long tracking shot. Back at the Marmont later, I checked the web for press coverage of the Australian Film Institute Awards, which I'm hosting this year. It all looked pretty positive.

Friday
I woke to find the 2007 brochure for a Sydney theatre under my door. Neil Armfield -- who directed my latest film, Candy -- and I are working together on a new translation of Eugene Ionesco's Exit the King to put on in Sydney next year. I'd seen the proofs online, but this was like holding a prayerbook in my hands. It made me hope we'd scrub up something good.

Hollywood movie star Orlando Bloom was seen being greeted by friends and family on his return home to the UK on Tuesday. The star of hit movies such as The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean seemed to be in such a happy mood that he even picked up a bouquet of flowers from a nearby florist for one lucky friend.

Actor/30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto went on a rampage at the mtvU Woodie awards, screaming at Elijah Wood.

Jared starts whispering stuff in his ear and and occasionally pulling back to look him in the face. Jared then walks away and Elijah turns to his date…and says something. Well something about this must have pissed Jared off because he comes running back to the table, grabs Elijah by the neck and starts screaming at him. All I could catch was Jared calling him a “f*cking asshole”. He then shoves Elijah and storms off. Bodyguards come up and Elijah assures everyone he’s fine.

It was a long wait for the South County group calling itself the Gypsy Pyrates, but after six hours of staking out the Guadalupe Dunes, it snared the treasure.

The treasure was the elusive Capt. Jack Sparrow — aka actor Johnny Depp — and other crew members of the Black Pearl, the fastest pirate ship in Disney movie fiction.

Because of an odd combination of dedication and their own wild pirate attire, the Gypsy Pyrates captured Depp’s attention last Thursday as he left the set of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End." It’s the third in a series of stories about Sparrow’s adventures.

Rasha Wyndsong, one of the Gypsy Pyrates, was joined in the adventure by "Kyo" Million and Rachel Rodriguez. The three Grover Beach women drove their Gypsy Pyrates bus down West Main Street to the dunes in hopes of sighting Depp and other stars.

When filming ended for the day, Keira Knightley and two other stars in the movie, left in a separate vehicle that didn’t stop for fans, Wyndsong said. But Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp saw the group and had their van pull over. They then met the women and signed autographs on the outside of their bus.

Kevin McNally, who plays first mate Mr. Gibbs, and the actors who play the comedic pirate pair Pintel (Lee Arenberg) and Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook) were also on hand for photographs and signatures.

The Gypsy Pyrates are in a guild known from their appearances at the Central Coast Renaissance Faire and the Ojai Pirate Fair.

Wyndsong said Depp asked about her group and their bus.

I love Keri Russell arrggghh why did she have to join this film?????????

Keri Russell, Alessandro Nivola and Elias Koteas have joined Sigourney Weaver and Kate Bosworth in playwright David Auburn’s psychological thriller “The Girl In The Park.” Auburn who penned the script will make his directorial debut on the film, scheduled to begin filming November 13 in New York.

Enduringly traumatized by the disappearance of her 3 year old daughter 15 years ago, Julia Sandburg (Weaver) has cut herself off from anyone once near and dear to her, including her ex husband Doug and her son Chris, who tried for years to penetrate her wall of isolation and despair, without success. But when Julia meets Louise (Bosworth), a troubled young woman with a checkered past, all Julia’s old psychic wounds painfully resurface, as does her illogical and increasingly irrational hope that Louise may be the daughter she lost so long ago.

Auburn is best known for his 2000 play “Proof”. It won the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play, as well as the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. His most recent work is the screenplay for the Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock drama “The Lake House.”

American actress Kate Bosworth's weight has been the subject of many a magazine cover and plenty of gossip, but don't bother asking the Hollywood star about her thin frame.

The actress is in Australia for the Melbourne Cup Carnival, where she has been invited to spruik a mobile phone company.

Asked whether she was comfortable with the way she looked, her American publicist jumped straight in.

"Can we just focus on what we are here for, Derby Day?" the publicist said.

Bosworth also refused to answer questions about her ex-boyfriend, Hollywood hunk Orlando Bloom.

But Bosworth was happy to talk about her love for all things Australian and her latest beau, New York based model James Rousseau.

The Californian star said she regarded Australia as her second home.

"When I landed in Sydney, I feel like I am coming home in a way," she smiled. "Home is where the heart is, right?"

Bosworth also revealed she'd be back next year to be bridesmaid for her "best friend's" wedding.

"I met one of my best friends in the whole wide world (in Australia).

"I will come back to see her. She is getting married next year so I will be coming back as one of her bridesmaids," Bosworth smiled.

This trip will be short and sweet, with the star attending Melbourne's Derby Day on Saturday before jetting back to New York.

Bosworth will dazzle punters trackside on Saturday in a frock by Australian designer Collette Dinnigan.

She has James a man who actually goes places with her and lets her actually walk beside him without looking like he is about to pass a stone. Not to mention she looks happy with him as well and he doesn't look like he wants to commit suicide.

'Pirates 3' Flies With More Dutchmen

Davy Jones and the cursed crew of The Flying Dutchman will get a few more barnacle-encrusted hands on deck.

Before the highly anticipated sequel "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" sets sail next spring, the visual effects department will have the task of creating new computer-generated shipmates to man the ghost ship.

"We're actually working on between six and ten new creatures. They're additional Dutchmen," says Industrial Light & Magic's Aaron McBride, the visual effects art director on "Pirates." "We just got approval last week on some of the designs that we did. So yeah, [I'm] looking forward to developing those guys."

These aren't any ordinary sailors, though. Each of Davy Jones's cursed seafarers exhibits physical deformities of an aquatic or nautical nature, such as the Dutchman Maccus, who has a hammerhead shark-style head or Penrod, who looks like a giant shrimp.

"A lot of the art we do here at the ILM art department is to kind of develop a look for the curse," explains McBride. "A lot of these were taken from the initial design pass that was done down in LA with [director] Gore Verbinski and his art department, including Crash McCreery. So what we tried to do was develop kind of a hierarchy to the curse, the idea being that the longer you serve on Davy Jones' crew on the Flying Dutchman, the more sort of encrusted you become, the more calcified, caked with barnacles and sea life."

Each of these unique characters is 100 percent CG on the big screen, including Davy Jones, the crew's murderous leader who has a rather squidlike face sporting 40-something squirming tentacles in place of hair and a beard. The captain provided the biggest technical challenge for the second "Pirates" movie because of the tentacles, his interaction with other characters and the need to create something creepy yet believably humanoidd.

Although British actor Bill Nighy performed the part, his physical presence only provided the animators with a reference for how the digital character would appear and interact on the screen. Only Nighy's voice and inspiration remained in the finished cut.

"There's not a big, technological hurdle with those [new] characters, but there is an aspect to '3' that's a huge hurdle for the visual effects crew," adds Animation Supervisor Hal T. Hickel. "I can't really say what it is, but as big as Davy was for us on '2,' this other stuff is going to be just as big a headache for us on '3.'"

At least this time around, creating Davy Jones won't be quite so difficult since the special tools they created for him are already in place. In addition, Nighy won't have to wear strange makeup around his eyes and mouth, which was Verbinski's backup plan. In case the VFX team couldn't create a 100 percent believable CG Davy Jones, Plan B was for the CG character to be laid on top of Nighy's footage, with the actor's eyes and mouth peeking out.

"That was a hindrance to us," says Geoff Campbell, senior digital model supervisor, whose job is to pore over every nuance in Nighy's expression to recreate it in the digital Davy Jones. "In some of these shots, certainly in the [dice game] sequence, sometimes because it was so dark in there, it was so hard to see what his eyes were doing. Sometimes you'd be staring at the lips, trying to understand a contour that was somehow making our model look very different from Bill Nighy's performance. Then you'd realize that you were misunderstanding where that lip line dropped off. So we were really happy to not have to deal with that on this last one because now we have a much cleaner plate of the actor to reference."

The third time's the charm for the ILM crew, whose work on "Pirates 3" is progressing right on schedule. The team already has a quarter of the approximately 800 shots that require their expertise.

"We have about 200 shots right now that have been turned in to us," says Hickel. 'So we're cruising along. In an ideal world, all the shooting would be done and the edits would be at a great point where the running length of the film felt pretty good before the visual effects were really underway in earnest. But that's just not the world we live in ... so there's going to be overlap. But you know, Gore is delivering sequences to us pretty regularly ... so that helps a lot."

"At World's End," starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, takes to the cinematic waters worldwide on May 25, 2007.
