Grandmaster Flash wins Hip-Hop Icon award

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-11-19 - 07:46:44

Grandmaster Flash has been named a Hip-Hop Icon for his achievements at the first Black Entertainment Television awards.

The DJ and musician was honored with the "I am Hip-Hop" title at the event, shown live in the US on Wednesday night, where current leading lights in the genre paid tribute to his contribution.

Chamillionaire, who won an award for best newcomer on the night, said Flash had made a unique mark on music. "He's created something that is important to everybody in the hip-hop world from rappers, to DJs, to dancers to break dancers," he explained. "He has influenced everybody in the hip-hop world."

The successful DJ said Flash was also responsible for the mix tape tradition that now sees young artists get their work played across the world. "Mix tapes are controlled by DJs and DJs are the reason why people like me are even successful," commented Chamillionaire. "When any record is hot in the club, or is getting a buzz it's because of the DJ."

Flash first developed the practice of playing two beats together to create a new sound, which was then used to rap over, after playing as a teenager, he said after collecting his award. "I actually didn't realise what I was onto," Flash told Reuters. "All I knew was I was very frustrated with the way DJs were playing at the time."

Lohan spotted kissing Calum Best

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-11-19 - 07:44:24

A busy night out in London for Lindsay Lohan saw the star throwing tantrums and kissing Calum Best.

The Mean Girls actress arrived at a party thrown by designer Donna Karan at 9.30pm on Thursday but was furious after being told that there was no VIP room.

A source told The Mirror: "Lindsay was inconsolable within just five minutes of arriving. She was taken to a sofa upstairs and surrounded by bodyguards - but didn't like it that guests kept taking a peek at her.

"So she let rip at organisers to create a VIP section and couldn't stop the tears from coming. After Donna Karan saw how upset she was, she created a make-shift VIP section for her."

A frustrated Lohan had soon had enough, however, and she made her way to South Kensington's Boujis club and finally Kabaret's Prophecy, where she caught the eye of playboy Calum Best.

One onlooker revealed: "Calum went over and in no time had Lindsay giggling like a school girl. Within minutes they were snogging the faces off each other."

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes Marry!

It's official: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are now husband and wife. The couple exchanged vows Saturday in front of more than 150 guests at the Odescalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano, Italy, their rep, Arnold Robinson, confirms.

"The wedding was absolutely beautiful," says a guest.

With thousands of fans, photographers and TV cameras watching from afar, Cruise and Holmes were joined by family – Katie's dad Martin walked her down the aisle – and a slew of celeb pals, including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Brooke Shields and Chris Henchy, Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, and Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy, among others.

The sunset ceremony was performed by a Scientology minister, according to a statement from their reps. The wedding party included Cruise's children, Isabella and Connor, the best man was Cruise's best friend, David Miscavige – the head of the Church of Scientology – and Katie's sister Nancy Blaylock served as the matron of honor.

Though initially there were questions about whether Cruise and Holmes's marriage on Saturday was official – the Mayor of Bracciano, Italy, said the couple needed to have a civil ceremony in town in order to make it legal – Cruise's reps say Tom and Katie took care of everything beforehand.

"As is customary for couples marrying outside of the United States, Cruise and Holmes officialized their marriage in Los Angeles prior to their departure for Italy," according to the statement.

Other details released Saturday by the newlyweds:

- The bride: Holmes wore an off-the-shoulder Armani gown with a train in ivory silk cadis adorned in Valenciennes lace and Swarovski beaded crystal embroidery. Holmes also wore an ivory tulle floor-length veil and ivory silk shoes. Armani, which outfitted the entire wedding, also supplied Katie's bouquet of calla lilies, as well as a champagne evening gown, which she wore at the reception.

- The groom: Cruise wore a navy blue Armani tux.

- The couple's rings: Their rings were white gold Cartier with diamonds.

- The meal: After cocktails, guests were served Italian hors d'oeuvres, followed by a multi-course meal.

- The cake: Five-tiered white chocolate, decorated with marzipan roses, and studded with white chocolate chips.

- The entertainment: Italian singer Andrea Bocelli.

Saturday's wedding started on a damp note, with scattered rain throughout the morning. Holmes and 7-month-old daughter Suri were escorted into the castle under a cluster of green umbrellas. A little over an hour later, the groom was escorted from the Hassler hotel in Rome to Lake Bracciano 18 miles away. With the sun going down, candles lit up the perimeter of the 15th-century castle as limousines carrying the guests drove through the gates.

Fans and media were kept at a safe distance from the castle: Police checkpoints prevented anyone unauthorized from getting too close, and journalists were stationed in the nearby town square.

Saturday's ceremony brought the couple's 19-month romance full circle: Cruise and Holmes first stepped out as a couple in Rome in April 2005, with Cruise already referring to Holmes as "amore mio" just a few weeks after their first date (sushi, a private plane ride and a motorcycle trip to the beach).

Life changed even more in mid-June 2005. During a late-night candlelit dinner at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Cruise proposed with a five-carat diamond ring. "I want to marry her as soon as possible," Cruise announced. "You have to do what you feel is right," he said at the time. "It's (about) your own integrity and how you want to live your life."

The pair had another reason to celebrate in October, when they announced they were expecting a baby. Holmes "almost seems born for motherhood," her pal and former Dawson's Creek costar Oliver Hudson said. "She's a nurturer."

The pair welcomed 7-lb., 7-oz. Suri on April 18. "The moment I looked in her eyes I felt like ... Mom," Holmes told a magazine of her new bundle of joy. "She's the miracle of our life."

Michael Jackson decides to make films

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-11-19 - 07:31:59

Michael Jackson has decided to ditch his hopes of reviving his music career and concentrate on film-making.

The 48-year-old realised that it was time to leave pop behind after his performance of We Are The World at the World Music Awards on Wednesday was poorly received by the audience.

"He knows the WMAs didn't go well," a source said. "He's a pragmatic man and realises his musical comeback has every chance of being a disaster, so he's diversifying. He wants to produce pictures that can be watched by all ages."

Smoked out by Woody

by lawsonjeff @ 2006-11-19 - 07:29:19

Ewan McGregor is trying to kick smoking again using hypnosis, all because of Woody Allen. 'I'm determined this time, really. It has to work.' Ewan's wife has demanded it as a trade-off for him ruining the summer by shooting with Allen in London on an as-yet-untitled project when family holidays to California were booked. 'Eve's an even bigger Woody fan than me, so she didn't really mind - when Woody calls, you have to answer. It was just fantastic and I never got over it,' he says. 'I was just as blown away on the first day as the last. I've always wanted to work with an old master and Woody's old and definitely a master; it was pure joy. And I was working with Colin Farrell who turns out to be an excellent bloke, a real laugh. I'm not supposed to say anything about it, really, but this isn't an out-and-out comedy, although it's very funny in places.' Ewan will be back in Britain shortly, reuniting with his Young Adam co-star Emily Mortimer for Number 13, about on-set intrigue during the making of an early Hitchcock film.

Now that Bond's gone all adult, the area of gadgets and Qs is surely there for the taking. Although teen spy Alex Rider made his debut in cinemas with Stormbreaker this year, its author and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz has revealed that a screen future is far from certain for his callow hero: 'It's still to be decided,' he said. 'They paid me to write the script for Point Blanc, the next book in the series, but nobody's sure if it will make it to the screen.' Harvey Weinstein put up the $40m budget for the initial film but, in a limited release last month, American audiences, who already have their own teen spook, Agent Cody Banks, failed to take to the very British spy. Yet Horowitz is hoping the invigorated Bond will inspire further interest in Rider and all things espionage. 'It leaves me room to revisit the Goldfinger and Thunderball-type gimmicky movies of my youth.'
